Anchors aweigh for community seafood pilot program

Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust brings scallops to those in need.

Scallops are coming to Vineyarders facing food insecurity. Fueled by a donation from the Fink Family Foundation, the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust (MVFPT) will distribute 200 pounds of sea scallops next week with the help of partners such as the Island Food Pantry, Island Grown Initiative, Good Shepherd Parish, First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, and the Emergency Food Program.

To support the hard work of the Island fishing community, the Martha’s Vineyard Fisherman’s Preservation Trusts hosted “Meet the Fleet” last Thursday. This year’s fifth annual event invited the community onto the boats to give people an inside look at where their favorite fish comes from. 

Island residents and visitors are afforded a wide variety of locally caught seafood in our fish markets and restaurants. But the cod, haddock, and scallops are only there because fishermen, from Martha’s Vineyard and beyond, cast their nets and their lines, rain or shine.

Helicopter demo at Meet the Fleet

The U.S. Coast Guard put on a helicopter search and rescue (SAR) demonstration last Thursday in Menemsha Harbor during the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust’s Meet the Fleet event. Air Station Cape Cod flew in an MH60 Jayhawk, one of six in the nation painted yellow to commemorate the coloring of Coast Guard and Navy helicopters from the mid-20th century.
